Demetrius’s Shave Cream (Recipe Included!)

It’s time to start taking control of what we put on our skin, and save money at the same time!

Up until four years ago, I had no idea that what I put on my skin winds up in my bloodstream.  In fact, I remember someone telling me that our skin acts as a barrier that protects us from toxins…and isn’t that wonderful?  I’m not sure if that was old science or what, but we surely know now that our skin is our biggest organ, and if we don’t treat it right, we leave ourselves open to disease, hormonal imbalances, and biotoxin illness.  Is your hygiene routine making you sick?  Well, I’ll tell you…I just met someone who I will be interviewing for the next My Beautiful Advent, and she can really clear up some questions in this area!  So that you don’t have to wait until November, I’ve tackled the question of shaving cream, and Demetrius (my husband) loves it! (Not so much my toothpaste and deodorant, but I’m working on it!)  In the meantime, I use Dr. Bronner’s Toothpaste, and Ambre Deodorant in Invoke Scent.  Yes, expensive, but it lasts a long time, and won’t hurt me.  There are many choices in the deodorant department if you look online.

Demetrius’s former popular brand of shave cream contained these ingredients among others that have been linked to disease:

  • Sodium Laurel Sulfate or SLS:  Close to 16,000 studies in the PubMed science library state that SLS is linked to organ toxicity, developmental/reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption, ecotoxicology, biochemical or cellular changes, and possible mutations and cancer.
  • Triethanolamine:  In clinical trials done on animals, high doses of Triethanolamine caused liver, bladder and testicular cancer.  Similar animal studies showed Triethanolamine can have negative effects on organs, even in low doses, especially when applied around the lips, mouth and eyes.

Shave Cream for the Love of My Life

1/4 Cup Coconut Oil

2 TBL Shea Butter

2 Tsp Baking Soda

1/4 Cup Castille Soap

1 Tsp Vitamin E

10 drops Doterra Lavender Essential Oil (I like lavender for it’s soothing/healing power)

Melt the oil and shea butter in the microwave for about 15 seconds, or in a double boiler.  (Be very careful in the microwave…best to start at 10 seconds and see how it’s doing.  You don’t want to “cook” it.  Think about chocolate…if you’ve ever tried to melt chocolate in a microwave without burning it)

Remove from heat and add baking soda and castille soap.  Whisk until smooth and cooled off.  Add vitamin E and essential oil.

I just put it in a wide mouth container with a lid, and it keeps in his bathroom cupboard without refrigeration.

I also just bought him a new razor from Harry’s which he really likes!  By saving so much money on shave cream, I figured I could splurge on a nice razor 🙂

Blessings to all of you, and let me know if you try this and like it!

Cynthia
